Beyond the Toolbox: Fragrant Father's Day 2012

You're not alone - many people are not sure what to bring dad on Father's Day. Barbecues and tool boxes are great, but for some variety, help dad change around his scent wardrobe and shift gears into summer with something bold, masculine and fun that's like nobody else's cologne.

At Ayala Moriel we have special fragrances for dad, beginning with our new Etrog Oy de Cologne!

Also - the worst form of government, except all other (aka Democracy) is back for limited time only!!!
This masculine ambery chypre is juxtaposes fresh woodsy notes of juniper and bergamot with crisp geranium leaf, over a sensual classic Chypre base of oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum.
Don't forget to put your votes in.

ArtbitRary is a great way to start the summer, with basil, jasmine & lime and hay absolute. The travel size candle is all you need to scent a room and clear all that barbecue smoke out...

Orcas has been popular ever since it was conceived, and was even nominated for the Indie FiFi Awards 2012. Capturing the scent of the Pacific Northwest with notes of seaweed, rosemary, spruce and lime - it will also be available in candles as of next week, packaged in our own custom made ceramic vessels by eikcam.

And for discerning dads with a taste for something different that's all their own, there are one of a kind perfumes such as Incense & Chocolate, Fougère Classique and Vetiver Blanc.

April Showers Bring Mom Flowers...

Dear Fragrant Friends,

During the month of May, we will be celebrating the virtues of motherhood in many countries in the world. There are many ways to show our appreciation and gratitude to the women who gave us life. Here are a few fragrant gift ideas that will make the day meaningful and memorable, and are also respectful of Mother Earth,

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS, with our new coffret of beautiful perfumes from our Language of Flowers Soliflore Collection (4ml x 8), or continue reading for more information about flowers connected with Mother’s Day, and fragrant gift offerings.

In this newsletter:

  1. Carnation: Mother's Day Flower

  2. Olive for Peace

  3. A Pink Rose for Gratitude

  4. Violets: Modest and Faithful

  5. Lavender for Devotion

  6. Orange Blossom: Eternal Love

  7. Geranium: True Frienship

  8. Indigo: Inspired by my Mother

  9. Mother's Day Afternoon Tea Menu Idea & Recipes

  10. Upcoming Events & Markets

1. Carnation: Mother's Day Flower

Our mothers love us unconditionally. Carnations are traditionally given and worn on Mother's Day, symbolizing the purity and resilience of a mother's love. Those mourning the loss of their mothers wear a white carnation, and everyone else wear colourful ones. So what can be more perfect than a carnation perfume for Mother's Day?

InCarnation is a carnation soliflore. Peppery, fiery, sweet and seductive. It unfolds its voluptuous petals dusted with nutmeg and mace, and unleashes its scent with a spinning of a Flamenco dancer’s skirt.

InCarnation perfume is offered in three different incarnations: parfum extrait (9ml or 4ml), perfume oil roll-on (5ml or 10ml), and a solid perfume, encased in our signature pendants, as well as this beautiful carnation-illustrated vintage pillbox from Murano, Italy.

Other gift ideas:

InCarnation Solid Perfume

2.Olive for Peace

Olive branches have been a symbol of peace since the story of Noah’s Arc. The fruit, leaves and resins can all be used in perfumery, but rarely are. The flowers of sweet olive, aka osmanthus exude the most beautiful and unusual fragrance, reminiscent of apricot, green tea and a hint of leather. Kinmokusei, our osmanthus soliflore, contains osmanthus absolute and olive tree resin tincture. Osmanthus flowers are also what gives our Charisma tea its suave aroma.

Did you know?
Mother’s Day in North America was initiated by American activist Anna Jarvis who devoted her life for peace, health and social justice for her people, and in 1914 established the 2nd Sunday of May as “Mother’s Day for Peace”, so that mothers would not need to suffer the pain of bereavement due to war ever again. So it is only fitting to do something to promote world peace – starting with making peace with ourselves, our families, communities and worldwide peace efforts.

Other gift ideas:

Kinmokusei Solid Perfume in Bird Pillbox

Kinmokusei in Ethinic Perfume Ring

Charisma Perfumed Tea

3. A Pink Rose for Gratitude

Dark pink roses symbolize gratitude, and there is no better way to show it than with fragrant Roses from the perfumed variety – Rosa centifolia and Rosa damascena, both also pink, which are the theme for our Rosebud perfume - a pure rose soliflore.

4. Violets: Modest and Faithful

According to the Victorian language of flowers, blue violets symbolize faithfulness and white ones – modesty. Mothers are in no doubt the most faithful and reliable people in our lives. And it requires modesty and a strong sense of humility to be a mother – after all, mothers always want the best for their children, and always want their child to do even better than themselves.

Viola is our violet soliflore – soft and cuddly like a mother’s embrace, and as classy as a string of pearls. It has a certain Victorian feel to it, with an upbeat, modern spin that makes it really easy to wear year around and in any occasion.

Other gift ideas:

Indigo, the perfume I originally created a signature perfume to my own mother, also has a beautiful violet heart.

5. Lavender for Devotion

In recognition of our mother’s devotion, Lovender is a perfume that is as fresh as a bouquet of lavender sprigs, and soft as linen immersed in the dried buds sachet. Iris and vanilla give it a velvety smoothness, while lemon and rosewood give it an uplifting, pick-me-up aroma that will give mom a boost of relaxed energy. Lovender is confident, pretty and made with love.

Other gift ideas:

Lavender Ritual Bath Salts

6. Orange Blossom: Eternal Love

A mother's love is eternal and lives on after her with her children who carry her memory and legacy. Orange blossom symbolizes eternal love in the language of flowers. Zohar is our orange blossom soliflore and is a scent that always brings me a feeling of expansive happiness with its scent of orchards in full bloom...

7. Geranium: True Friendship

Geranium plant symbolizes true friendship, and who is a better friend than our mother? She’s always there for us, no matter what or how badly we messed up… Honoring our mother’s true friendship, kindness and generosity I’ve created these very special Mother’s

Day Geranium Ritual Bath Salts last year, with pink Himalayan salt! They also contain lavender and chamomile, and smell like a soft caress and a garden full of humming bees.

Other recommendations:

Geranium Leaf One-Of-A-Kind Perfume

Cabaret perfume also features notes of rose geranium

8. Indigo for my Mother

Indigo was first conceived in 2002 as a signature scent for my mother, and went under further transformation in 2004. For the oil and solid perfume, the formulation is slightly different than the parfum extrait, employing orange flower water absolute in addition to the neroli, to achieve a greater depth and smoothness.

I believe the concept of mother, although very familiar to most of us from as long as we remember ourselves, is full of mystery. My mother in particular has quite an enigmatic personality, so making a perfume for her was a challenging exercise in decoding her through olfactory terms… As if to challenge me further, my mother has developed partial anosmia throughout the years, so I was never to really know if I succeeded in creating a scent for her liking. This made the whole process more of a personal and creative journey for me.

My selection of notes relied a little on certain aromatics that my mother likes (though I cannot tell if she likes them for their aroma, taste, or their known therapeutic benefits, these scents have been always associated with her for me because she used them often).

Therefore, I relied but far more heavily on my own subjective perception of my mother’s personality and what the concept of “mother” is to me, in the most abstract as well as primordial meaning: someone who is protective and strong and always giving. But also someone that existed here before us and therefore there is always a substantial amount of mystery about them: we don’t know what happened or who they were until we’ve arrived.

I chose aniseed as a top note because my mother always loved anise in all of its forms (as a tisane, spice and also the fresh fennel bulbs). I also included tarragon to add an extra interest and a green lift to the aniseed sweetness. The heart consists mostly of a violet accord, using violet leaf, orris and boronia, bearing the association of indigo velvet, which is equally soft and smooth, but also strangely cool. Carnation, incense and amber contribute warmth and help smooth the perfume, while Himalayan cedar brings us back again to a cool, smooth elegance, reminiscent of polished granite.

Indigo plays mostly on the dualities of cool vs. warm, soft and intimate vs. sleek and elegant. It’s my mother’s embrace when she’s wearing her velvet indigo tunic, and us picking wild herbs in the mountains together. It evokes for me the feeling of a dark blue summer night, full of secrets and exotic smells and hidden surprises.

9. Mother's Day Afternoon Tea

The Mother's Day afternoon tea that I was hoping to hold on May 9th is unfortunately not going to happen this year. Instead, I bring to you recipes and menu ideas so that you can throw your own Mother's Day tea party at the comfort of your own home!

Tea served:
Lavender Earl Gray (the best one I had so far was served at the Fairmont hotels. It is called "Versailles" and it is possible to special order it through their gift shop at The Empress in Victoria). What I like about it the most is that it is not bitter, and is so pretty and light like a lavender field, and is wonderful even without any sweeterning or milk, which I find rare in black teas.

1st Tier: Tea Sandwiches

Mother's Day afternoon tea should be elegant and relaxed affair. The key for that to happe is keeping things simple and sticking to the basics. Cucumber tea sandwiches are not only simple to make, they are also (in my opinion) the best of the bunch! If you must have more than one flavour, egg salad would be nice as well as simple to pull together.

2nd Tier: Scones, cream and jam

3rd Tier: Sweets
Earl Grey Truffles
Lemon Tarts
Lavender-Violet-blueberry Cupcakes (you can make these by adding a 1/4 teaspoon of lavender buds to your favourite blueberry cupcake recipe; decorate with cream cheese icing and candied violet petals).

Lavender Shortbread Cookies (recipe below)
1/2 cup (1 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
¼ cup icing sugar
Some fine sugar for sprinkling (I use evaporated cane juice)
1 cups all-purpose unbleached flour
½ cup semolina flour
10 drops organic or wild-crafted lavender essential oil
3 tsp. food-grade dried lavender buds

Preheat oven to 300F.

a. Butter or line with parchment paper a 9” spring form pan

b. Beat together butter, sugar and lavender essential oil until sugar completely dissolves in butter, and butter is uniformly smooth. Add lavender buds (you may want to rub the buds between your palms before adding).

c. Sift flours together

d. Add flours to the butter to make a smooth dough (as much as possible)

e. Press dough evenly into the pan, and prick with a fork.

f. Bake for 45-50 minutes, until the edges are pale brown and the centre is golden in colour.

g. Sprinkle with some superfine sugar (if desired).

h. Let cool for a couple of minutes, than slice with a pizza cutter.

Smelly Gifts, The DIY Way

I had an elaborate plan for three consecutive gift guides for this holiday season, with an environmentally-friendly spin. Unfortunately, I got drowned in the Ayala Moriel holiday rush before I was able to post any of them. Now we are just a little over a week away so it’s time to improvise and get creative in order to make it to the bottom of the to-do list.

How about some crafty and fun holiday activities and gifts, some of which you can make yourself, others will inspire and encourage others to be creative. With the days shortening and the temperatures dropping, we are spending much more time at home. Better get those creative juices going instead of turning into couch potatoes, right?
I’m even going to try to convince you that these gifts are less time-consuming than shopping around endlessly.

PERFUMERY KITS
Inspire a young family member to delve into the art of natural perfumery with this introductory and simple Perfumery Kit from Elmer’s science kits (available via ArtSuppliesOnline.com). It includes 5 different blends – 5 single notes (apple, jasmine, heliotrope, lily, and one which is plainly peppermint). These are not natural essences by any means (even if the labeling may imply so, by having the Latin name of each plan in the short ingredient list)). However, they are all based in sunflower oil. The package comes with the 5 essences, 5 empty plastic vials and 5 plastic pipettes. It will fascinate any youngster who is interested in science or perfume, or both. Recommended for ages 8 and up, and requires adult supervision.

For the grown-up obsessed with the world of aromatic, Nature’s Gift offers many different kinds of aromatherapy and natural perfumery kits, for the amateur perfumer (i.e.: Perfumer’s Kit One) or the fragrance connoisseur (i.e.: Wood Lovers Sampler Kit; Chai Spice Kit).

SCENTED GREETING CARDS
I’ve been really enjoying making greeting cards with Tamya using the Paper Fashions kits by Klutz Press and than of course there is the fancy edition which might be more appropriate for this time of the year. These designs can be glued to a blank greeting card. I've also found really colourful ones at Essence du Papier (available at Sears in Canada). If you want to make those even fancier, dab a drop of perfume to the inner spine or corner of the card, or a simple blend of festive, wintery essential oils, for example:

2 drops Allspice Essential Oil
1 drop Cinnamon Essential Oil
2 drops Balsam Fir Essential Oil
1 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
4 Juniper Essential Oil
5 drops Bitter Orange Essential Oil
4 drops Pine Essential Oil

A fine way to dress up any paper – and in particular hand-made paper embedded with botanicals is to immerse it with essences. Cut the paper to the desired size. If you have a scented sachet, place the sachet in a Ziploc bag along with the paper. If you start now, they will be ready for December 25th with a subtle pleasing aroma. Another way of scenting them is to pour an essential oil blend (i.e.: the one above, or even something simpler, such as some rose oil or vetiver oil alone) and place those on a cotton ball. Just make sure the essential oils don’t come into direct contact with the paper, as that would stain the paper.

News from the Nose: Holiday Gift Guide

Dear Fragrant Friends,

The past two months were full with many many studio guests, students and shipments of new candles and teas (these have been selling out fast!).

I feel very grateful and am thankful for your support over the years and for spreading the word about my little perfumery. Tomorrow being Thanksgiving in the USA, there is no better timing for expressing my gratitude for being able to support my family by doing the work that I love, while bringing beautiful fragrances to many lives and homes - the natural way - not to mention two new locations in Vancouver and an interview on Sniffapalooza magazine!

Happy Thanksgiving and wishing you all the best for this upcoming holiday season! And may it be stress-free and most joyful!

In this newsletter:

Two New Vancouver Locations

Ayala Moriel is proud to announce two new locations in Vancouver where you can find our products: Belmondo and Beyond Pilates.

Belmondo Skin Care Studio, situated at the prestigious Electra Health Floor, 970 Burrard Street, tel. (604)685-4325 is an organic skin care studio, where you can get a full organic facial and body treatments and complementary massages. The atmosphere at Belmondo is especially relaxed because of the Daniela's lovable and most pleasant personality, which makes every visit there a real treat.

Belmondo now offers Ayala Moriel's candles, teas and gift sets of samples + gift cards alongside their organic skin care products from Eminence.

Noam Gagnon's Wellness Centre - Beyond Pilates is Ayala's favourite Pilates studio in town if not in the entire world. The teachers are incredibly knowledgeable, kind and helpful in everyway and most importantly - have a great sense of humour! The place has a unique ambience, with state of the art equipment and decor and the air always smell good, because there is always a scented candle burning! Noam's favourite candles from Ayala Moriel are Bois d'Hiver and White Potion.

Beyond Pilates will be offering select perfumes (Bois d'Hiver, ArbitRary, Immortelle l'Amour, White Potion, Roses et Chocolat) in the purse-roll-on size and their matching tea and/or candle as of the first week of December 2008.

Beyond Pilates is located on 928 Davie Street @ Burrard, Vancouver, BC, V6Z 1B8

Visit Portobello West this Weekend & Enter to Win "The Gift of Health"

It's hard to believe that yet another month has gone by and it's already time for Portobello West!

This coming Sunday, November 30th is Portobello West Art + Fashion Market, at the Rocky Mountaineer Station (Cottrel & Terminal Ave.). This one fashion and art event can single-handedly take care of most if not all the holiday shopping for you. If this is not a reason enough - how about this:

a) Visit my table and enter the draw to win The Gift of Health - a gift certificate for a full week of unlimited Pilates classes @ Beyond Pilates!

Simply put your name, email and tel. no. in the draw hat and the winner will be announced Sunday night.

b) Not quite as healthy - but definitely as good: I will be making my two most popular (and my own personal favourite) chocolate truffles for the market: Blood Truffles and Guilt Truffles. You won't believe how good they are till you try!

The Gift of Choice: Gift Cards + Sampler Sets

Give your loved one the fragrant gift of choice this season: a gift certificate from Ayala Moriel Parfums (pictured above). These gift cards look especially cute and presentable with the satin bow tied through them, and can be customized for any budget.

The giftee also receives a complementary fragrance consultation to help them find the best scent or samples from the Ayala Moriel perfume collection.

Gift cards are posted on the website in values of $65 (the cost of a purse-roll-on), $110 (parfum extrait) and $550 (signature perfume), but if none of these numbers or gift ideas are what you have in mind, we will be happy to send you a PayPal request for the total amount you are interested in.

We've also put together a few fabulous sampler gift boxes, to be accompanied by a gift card. This way they can pick for themselves which scent they want after trying a few of the fragrances.

There's an 8-sample package of our top-selling perfumes with a gift card of $65 (to go towards a purse-roll-on or any other purchase), and a more elaborate 15-sampler set with a $160 gift certificate.

For the men in your life: a sampler set of our 10 masculine fragrances + $110 gift certificate.

And for the floral lover: Language of Flowers soliflore gift set
includes a sample gift box of all 12 perfumes, plus a $110 gift
certificate.

The Gift of Light: Candle Gift Sets

Candles are the best treat in the dark and cold winter and a perfect accompaniment for the holiday season. Relax and enjoy the warmth of the indoors with Ayala Moriel's new candle collection. Some of the candles (i.e.: Bois d'Hiver and ArbitRary) also have the extra benefit of chasing away bacteria nd virus in the air because of the properties of the essential oils within them (coniferous, spice and citrus oils in particular).

These beautiful candles can be enjoyed alone, or while wearing the perfume that inspired them. That's why we offer them gift-wrapped and for a $10 discount when you buy Bois d'Hiver or ArbitRary perfume + candle together.

The Gift of Sharing: Teas and Truffles

Tea and chocolate are best enjoyed with somebody special. Our unique collection of beautifully perfumed teas and seductive hand-rolled chocolate truffles make a perfect gift for the holiday, one that is sure to be used up and most likely shared with others and make the holidays more memorable and relaxing.

As I mentioned on my previous newsletter, this is the time of the year where chocolate truffles are available on a regular basis (pretty much), and can be shipped across the country without the risk of melting.

Pick your flavour and we will make a special batch for you of 40-50 truffles at a time of
a flavour of your choice and are perfect for events and for
gift-giving. These exquisite truffles can be either served at your home
or business for holiday parties or wrapped individually in gift boxes to
pass on to special friends and colleagues. All flavours are sold for
$60 a batch.

Alternatively, you can pick a gift box from the current available flavour (we make a new flavour every week or so). This week I'm making the Blood Truffles (dark chocolate with rose otto, saffron and chili and a shot of Kahluah) and Guilt Truffles (dark chocolate with orange blossom and wild orange essences and a shot of Grand Mariner). These melt-in-your-mouth truffles are made with dark chocolate (75% cocoa) and organic whipping cream and are sold in gift-box for $12 per 8 truffles.

Tea Time Gift Sets

Our Tea-Time gift sets are an excellent way to incorporate fragrance and flavour. Wearing the perfume while sipping the tea gives the experience a whole new dimension.

Available in Immortelle l'Amour and Roses et Chocolat.

Interview on Snifnfapalooza Magazine

The mid-November issue of Sniffapalooza Magazine includes an interview with Ayala Moriel by Raphaella Brescia Barkley.

"Flowers always fascinated me. As a little girl, I would admire and
study their structure, shapes, colors and patterns. I always felt that
they had their own language. In a sense, the soliflore collection is
the grown-up incarnation of this flower obsession; only this time, the
emphasis is on the olfactory language rather than the visual. Each
soliflore is a micro-cosmos with its own mood, texture, rhythm and
memories."

News from the Nose: Perfumed Tea from Ayala Moriel and Gift Guide

In this newsletter:

Immortelle l'Amour Organic Tea

When I created Immortelle l'Amour it had Alice's "Drink Me!" label all over it. Today, my dream has finally come true: I had my first tea blend, accompanying my newest perfume, Immortelle l'Amour, is finally ready to be enjoyed. I had the pleasure of tasting this liquid perfumed-tea perfection this afternoon and it has exceeded my wildest dreams of my perfume-to-tea adaptation.

Made with the finest organic rooibos, infused with Madagascan vanilla beans, and with a touch of cinnamon, fruity sweet orange peel and a splash of calendula flowers for colour - Immortelle l'Amour is exquisite in every possible way - visually and aromatically in it's dried form and delicious, full-bodied and sweet when brewed.

It's amazing what a few simple yet exquisite ingredients can create when married together. As with perfume - so it is with tea: the sum is greater than its parts. And here these are all the best quality there is: all organic, fresh and blended carefully by hand. Immortelle l'Amour perfumed tea is co-designed with Dawna Ehman, and produced and packaged by Inner Alchemy Tea Co. in Vancouver. It was such a delight to work with Dawna on this tea, and I am looking forward to be able to drink many more of my perfumes in the future - in the form of tea - and share them with you, of course!

Immortelle l'Amour is a living evidence for the beauty of plants and how they can be incorporated into our daily life, adding peace, pleasure and the

opportunity for sharing the moment with loved ones.

Our first batch of tea is offered at an introductory price of $18 per tin (each contains 70gr. Of organic tea; regular price is $30). Quantities are very limited, so order your tea now before this opportunity is gone!

Immortelle l'Amour Brewing Instructions & Serving Suggestion

I have this fascinating information and brewing tips for the Immortelle

l'Amour tea, from the tea-creator, Dawna Ehman of Inner Alchemy Tea Co.:

"For each 5 oz. cup of tea desired, add 1 tsp. of rooibos to freshly boiled water. Cover and steep (or simmer gently) for at least 10 minutes. Serve with cream and maple syrup for an exquisite dessert tea".

Rooibos Information & Properties

More from Dawna Ehman of Inner Alchemy Tea Co. - about the origins and properties of rooibos tea:

"Rooibos is produced by oxidizing the green needles of Aspalathus linearis, a wild broom-like shrub native to South Africa. It is a full flavored tea with low levels of tannin and no calories, oxalic acid or caffeine. Rooibos tisane contains many nutrients including a full spectrum of minerals, vitamin C and high levels of antioxidants. For optimum extraction and flavour, steep in boiling water for a minimum of 10 minutes.

The nourishing properties of Rooibos enable it to regulate nervous system imbalances such as headaches, irritability, insomnia, hypertension and depression. The anti-spasmodic properties of Rooibos aid in digestive imbalances like nausea, cramps, heartburn and constipation. As well, Rooibos is reputed to strengthen the body of low immunity and allergies like hay fever, asthma and eczema."

Portobello West - Two Last Markets!

Don't miss Portobello West's two last Christmas Markets, closing year 2007:
This coming Sunday, November 25th, and next month - on Sunday, December 16th. These are Ayala Moriel's two LAST markets, so don't miss them - just step out of your door, breath some fresh winter air, and come see us and tons more cool and beautiful locally made art & fashion at the market! Free admission, and parking is also free and in abundance; and for those of you who prefer the car-less life (like me!), there is a free shuttle from Main Street SkyTrain station every 20 minutes. And did I mention the yummy buckwheat crepes yet? They sure make me look forward to another market, but it will be so much better if you'll be there too!
For more information about Portobello West visit the website.
